Why learn German?
German is a major language for trade and business. The German economy is the largest in Europe and the fourth largest in the world (in 2008). The German economy alone is 40% bigger than the UK economy and the combined economies of the German-speaking countries of Europe are 60% bigger than the UK economy on its own.
Germany is the second largest export partner that the UK has and accounts for 11% of everything the UK exports, second only to the USA (15%). It’s also the largest source of imports into the UK. Almost 15% of all UK imports come from Germany; that’s twice the amount that the UK imports from China. (Import/export data: 2007).
German is also a language of literature (Schiller, Goethe, Thomas Mann, Guenther Gras); science (Einstein, Schroedinger, Wernher von Braun); philosophy (Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Hegel, Wittgenstein, Marx); and psychology (Freud, Adler, Jung).
German is spoken by about 130 million people worldwide. It's the official language of Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein and it is one of the official languages of Switzerland, Luxembourg and Belgium. It's also spoken in some areas of other countries which were formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
It is also an important second language in Eastern Europe.
