Our home study and correspondence courses take the beginner from zero knowledge through to a solid understanding of what’s going on in your new language. The lessons build one on another, gradually introducing you to more complex sentences and showing you exactly how to make sentences like that yourself.
You acquire the ability to create your own sentences because the course introduces the rules and patterns of the new language one at a time, all explained in English.
You start with the simplest sentences and gradually build up your knowledge, so you start by learning how to say, for instance
This is the house
and build up from there. Every time you encounter a new rule or pattern in the language, it’s explained in clear English in the course book and examples are given.
What’s different about this course is that it teaches you how to make the sentences, not merely how to repeat a phrase. So by the end of Level Four of the course you could use your knowledge to say something like:
Has she taken the cup? She shouldn’t give it to that man! She was supposed to be putting it away.
Each lesson has a story in it which introduces new words to you The stories are all acted out on the audio for you by native speakers and afterwards every new word is spoken for you on the audio in English and then in the new language. You repeat the word in the space that follows, so you learn to connect the sound and shape of the new word with its meaning.
Practice makes perfect and this course gives you plenty of opportunity to do just that. You practise the vocabulary you hear in the stories and there are exercises in the worksheets for you to do so that you can practise every new rule or pattern that you meet in the stories.
You're encouraged to check every exercise you do in order to make sure that you’ve understood and are getting it right. We offer two alternatives to help you do this:
1) The basic Mark-It-Yourself Option - use the Answer Book which we send you
or
2) Add the Marking Service Option - send us your work to be monitored and marked by one of our expert linguists - either a native speaker of a qualified language graduate
Our courses are told in the form of illustrated stories, complete with audio, so they’re easy and enjoyable to follow.
What's more, if you want to be able to demonstrate your new knowledge, you can choose to add the Certificate Option. Take a test and have the opportunity to earn a Certificate of Achievement at the end of each Level.
